The discipline that such a regimen would require will be most helpful to someone like me who has a very difficult time praying.

As I have preached so many times before, it may not be enough to simply acknowledge that I am a sinner - this goes without saying. To examine such a list honestly, however, might help one to identify the weaker areas within where temptation is at its greatest.

My prayer life lacks focus. Maybe it just is that I try to remember everything and everyone who needs the Lord's touch and soon simply become overwhelmed.Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06046469207005773680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8722186.post-1132382628058911162005-11-19T00:43:00.000-06:002005-11-19T00:43:00.000-06:00As a lifelong RCC, I have found list-form examinat...As a lifelong RCC, I have found list-form examination of conscience to be formalistic and deadly, though perhaps useful at certain points in one's life (there's a certain objectivity to the form, but even then, folks typically make excuses or try to justify themselves - at least, that's my experience).

I believe that Ignatius's examen was designed as a quick check, a way of remembering Christ in the midst of active service. I find it hard to conceive of this examen except as a way of recalling one's daily prayer of contemplation in which one begs Jesus to judge him by imagining oneself as a witness to the events of the Gospels.

I'm aware of my sinfulness and those obstacles within me that resist grace and hinder God's work within me. In addition to asking the Holy Spirit to help me know my failings better, I also pray with a Gospel reading before confession.

As Christians we should regard our sin as an opportunity for God to transform us and to set us free from those habits and attachments that keep us from following Christ where He leads.

FredFredhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01262662173303042998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8722186.post-1132316192300173992005-11-18T06:16:00.000-06:002005-11-18T06:16:00.000-06:00thanks joel, these questions are from the tradition...thanks joel,
these questions are from the traditional examen before confession in the catholic tradition. you raise a good point.

are there questions that ought to be eliminated and are there questions that ought to be asked that aren't in here?Jonathonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05754345540431565703noreply@blogger.com
