I GOT MY SYLLABUS!!

So I got my syllabus for the Summer class I'll be taking in a few weeks. RADICAL ORTHODOXY!!! SWEET!!!

I don't know a lot about this theological movement- but I do know that the main contributers to this movement are: John Milbank, Graham Ward, Daniel Bell, Will Cavanaugh, Catherine Pickstock, and Stephen D. Long (a United Methodist).

Here's the reading list- it's gonna be gooooood!!!

Introducing Radical Orthodoxy: Mapping a Post Secular Theology by James Smith
The Postmodern God: A Theological Reader, by Graham Ward
Radical Orthodoxy: A New Theology, by John Milbank, Catherine Pickstock, and Graham Ward
Augustine and Modernity by Michael Hanby
John Wesley's Moral Theology by Stephen D. Long (a united methodist)

If anyone has read any of these books and wants to let me know what they think- FEEL FREE TO!!

So class is the same week as the Emergent Convention, but class will be at night, 6-10pm so I can leave the convention, go to class. If I get out early I can make it back for a late night option.

ROCK ON RADOX!!

"ROCK ON RADOX!"

Ah, now there is the phrasing of a true seminarian -- to get that excited about theology.

Get ready to have your ass handed to you. Milbank is tough freaking stuff. You guys aren't reading Theology and Social Theory which is a crying shame, but you'll certainly get the flavor of it. I'd really recommened reading T&ST after the class as well as the Milbank/Pickstock Truth in Aquinas.

Also, if you haven't read MacIntyre's After Virtue or Whose Justice? Which Rationality those become must reads.

Oh yeah, then there's Hauerwas' response to Milbank in Must Christianity be Violent.

Wow, that's a lot to read, but if you've decided to jump into the Radical Orthodoxy conversation, then there's a lot to read.

Peace

I'm still trying to decide if I want to take the class. I too will be going to the Emergent Convention. Plus right smack in the middle of the semester I'll be having a baby. I'm having a hard time imagining keeping up with the reading with a seventeen month old and a new born in the house.

But who knows, I might just go for it.

Ok Kevin, if you go to emergent- we can car pool together and go back and forth to class. shoot, i'll even go to the hospital with ya and help you deliver the baby. I'M JUST THAT KIND OF FRIEND....

Ok that's just strange...

Steve Long was one of our favorite professors at Garrett. He is harcore into Orthodoxy. His book is very, very, very academic. You can't even talk about Ultimate Frisbee with this guy unless it's academic discourse. So, good luck with that one! It's totally your kind of thing.

Oh yes- bring STEPHEN LONG on!!!!

booyah!!! Maybe I should try and organize a game of ultimate frisbee between the Radical Orthodox Theologians and the Yale School Theologians. That would be fun to watch!!!

Thanks for the heads up Jenny!!
